Kunstivõltsimine, also known as art forgery, is the creation of fraudulent imitations of artworks, with the intent to deceive the buyer or owner. The aim is to pass off the forged work as authentic, often by claiming it was created by a famous artist. This practice can involve meticulously recreating the style, materials, and even the age of an original piece. Forgers might study an artist's techniques, use similar pigments and canvases, and even employ aging processes to make the forgery appear genuine.

The motivation behind art forgery is primarily financial gain. A forged painting attributed to a renowned artist can command a significantly higher price than a genuine work by an unknown artist or even a lesser-known work by the same famous artist. Beyond monetary motives, forgery can also be driven by a desire for fame, revenge, or even as a form of artistic commentary.

Detecting art forgeries is a complex process that involves various methods. Art historians and conservators employ stylistic analysis, examining brushstrokes, composition, and subject matter to compare with known works by the artist. Scientific analysis plays a crucial role, with techniques like X-ray, infrared reflectography, and pigment analysis used to identify anachronistic materials or hidden underdrawings. Provenance, the history of ownership of an artwork, is also a critical factor; a missing or questionable provenance can raise red flags. Despite these efforts, sophisticated forgeries can be extremely difficult to detect, posing a persistent challenge to the art market and institutions.
