Kshitigarbha, often known in Japan as Jizo, is a prominent bodhisattva in Mahayana Buddhism. He is particularly revered in East Asian Buddhist traditions, including China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. Kshitigarbha is depicted as a compassionate figure dedicated to the liberation of all sentient beings from suffering, especially those in hell realms. His name translates to "Earth Treasury" or "Earth Store," symbolizing his immense wisdom and potential for salvation.

This bodhisattva is often portrayed as a monk, typically with a shaved head, a simple robe, and sometimes holding a wish-fulfilling jewel or a staff. The staff is used to break open the gates of hell, while the jewel illuminates the darkness of ignorance. Kshitigarbha is considered a protector of children and a patron of those who have died, especially stillborn infants and miscarried fetuses. In Japan, small statues of Jizo, often adorned with red bibs and hats, are frequently found in cemeteries, along roadsides, and near temples, placed there by grieving parents or those seeking protection.

His vow to postpone his own Buddhahood until all hell realms are emptied is a central aspect of his devotion.
