Krimpning

Krimpning, or crimping, is a joining method that forms a permanent mechanical and electrical connection by deforming a connector around a conductor or other component using a crimping tool and matched dies. The deformation creates a mechanical interlock and, where electrical conductors are involved, a reliable conductive path without solder. The technique requires appropriate conductor size, connector type, and die set.

The process typically involves preparing the conductor, inserting it into a crimp terminal or sleeve, aligning with the correct die for the conductor and connector, and applying controlled force until the crimp height or another specification is met. Proper seating and the absence of nicks or insulation damage are essential. Tools range from manual crimp pliers to ratcheting, hydraulic, or pneumatic machines; dies are specific to the connector family and conductor gauge.

Krimpning is widely used in electrical installations, automotive wiring, aerospace, and electronics assembly, including insulated and non-insulated terminals, butt splices, and multi-wire connectors. It is also used in some mechanical assemblies to join sleeves, ferrules, or tubing.

Quality and reliability depend on correct tool use, material compatibility, and inspection. Standards and specifications from manufacturers and industry bodies govern crimp height, pull-out strength, corrosion resistance, and electrical continuity. Common failure modes include under-crimp, over-crimp, misalignment, and damaged conductors; testing may involve pull tests, continuity tests, and visual inspection.

Proper training and adherence to manufacturer instructions are essential for durable, code-compliant crimp connections.
