Kreativwechsel, literally "creative switch," is a term used in creativity training and design education to describe the deliberate alternation between different creative tasks, modes, or collaborators in order to stimulate ideation and counteract cognitive fixation. The word combines the German Kreativ (creative) and Wechsel (change or switch). While not a formal standard, the concept appears in workshops, classrooms and corporate development programs as a practical technique to diversify thinking patterns.

Typical implementations involve timeboxed cycles that alternate between divergent activities (generating ideas, exploring random associations) and convergent tasks (selecting, refining). Participants may switch between media (text, drawing, prototyping), roles (individual work, small groups, cross-disciplinary pairs), or problem framing (rewriting the brief, reframing the challenge). A common format is rotating stations or rotating roles within rounds, followed by structured reflection to capture insights.

Proponents argue Kreativwechsel can increase idea quantity and novelty by reducing cognitive fixation and encouraging cross-pollination between domains. It can also support collaboration skills and inclusivity by giving participants exposure to different viewpoints. Implementation requires careful facilitation to maintain clear objectives, adequate time, and psychological safety so participants feel comfortable switching tasks or teams.

Critics note that the approach may disrupt flow or be less effective for complex, expert-driven problems. Its success depends on context, the design of the cycles, and the facilitator's ability to balance structure with openness. As such, Kreativwechsel is best viewed as one of several tools for fostering creativity rather than a universal solution.
