Leonid Kuchma (Ukrainian: Леонід Данилович Кучма; born 9 August 1938) is a Ukrainian politician who served as the third President of Ukraine from 1994 to 2005. Born in the village of Chornobaivka, near Dnipro, he earned a degree in mechanical engineering from the Dnipropetrovsk Metallurgical Institute before pursuing a career in Soviet industry. Kuchma began his political career in the late 1980s, rising through the ranks of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) before joining the newly formed Ukrainian political elite after Ukraine’s independence in 1991.
