Kranfører, or crane operator, is a worker who controls cranes to lift, lower, and move heavy loads. They operate in environments such as construction sites, ports, manufacturing facilities, and logistics hubs, using different crane types to suit the task.

Typical duties include conducting pre-operational inspections, reading load charts, determining the appropriate rigging and attachments, and coordinating with riggers and signallers. Operators control crane movements from joysticks, levers, and control panels, while monitoring load stability, wind conditions, and surrounding hazards. They must ensure loads are secured and balanced, plan lifts to minimize risks, and shut down equipment and report faults when necessary. Maintaining equipment and keeping accurate records of inspections and maintenance are also common responsibilities.

Crane types commonly operated by kranførere include mobile cranes, crawler cranes, tower cranes, and overhead cranes. Each type has specific safety and operational requirements as well as different load characteristics and stability considerations.

Training and certification requirements vary by country and crane type. Most jurisdictions require formal training, demonstrated competence, and some form of certification or licensing. Training typically covers crane theory, rigging and signaling, load calculations, safety procedures, and practical operation, often supplemented by on-the-job training and periodic re-certification.
