Kraftfahrzeugüberprüfung is the term used to describe the formal assessment of a motor vehicle to verify its roadworthiness and compliance with safety and emission standards. In German-speaking regions, this process is most commonly realized through the Hauptuntersuchung (HU) and the Abgasuntersuchung (AU), which together form the standard inspection for passenger cars and many other vehicle types.

The inspection covers a range of safety-critical and environmental aspects. Typical checks include the brake system, steering, suspension, tires, lights, and visibility, as well as the condition of seat belts, airbags, exhaust system, and the vehicle’s body integrity. Emissions testing is also part of the process to ensure compliance with applicable air-quality standards. Inspections are performed by authorized organizations such as TÜV, DEKRA, GTÜ, and KÜS, and may involve both a visual inspection and functional tests. The results are recorded and, if successful, a certificate is issued.

Frequency and consequences vary by jurisdiction, but in many countries, a HU/AU-style inspection occurs regularly (for example, every one to two years for passenger cars). New vehicles often have a first inspection after several years. If defects are found, they must be repaired and the vehicle re-inspected within a specified period; driving with an invalid or expired certificate can lead to fines, registration issues, or the vehicle being deemed unfit for road use.

Internationally, roadworthiness testing is generally guided by EU or national regulations, with harmonized objectives but varying schedules and procedures among member states.
