Kotieläinryhmät, known in English as domestic animal groups, refers to the classification of domesticated animals based on their primary purpose or use for humans. These groups help in understanding the roles these animals play in agriculture, food production, and other aspects of human society. The most common categories include livestock raised for meat, dairy, and eggs, as well as animals used for fiber production, labor, and companionship.

Within livestock, there are several sub-groups. Ruminants, such as cattle and sheep, are characterized by their multi-chambered stomachs and are primarily raised for meat and milk. Poultry, including chickens, ducks, and turkeys, are typically kept for their eggs and meat. Swine, or pigs, are also primarily meat producers. Animals like horses and donkeys, historically important for transportation and labor, are often considered separately, though some are now raised for meat. Fiber-producing animals, such as sheep and goats, are valued for their wool and other fibers.

Beyond those directly involved in production, companion animals like dogs and cats, while domesticated, are generally not categorized under traditional "kotieläinryhmät" as their primary role is companionship rather than economic output. However, the lines can sometimes blur, as some animals might serve multiple purposes.
