Kostnaðarnytingargreiningar, or cost-benefit analysis in English, is an analytical approach used to assess the desirability of a project or decision by comparing its expected benefits against its expected costs. The core principle is to determine if the potential gains outweigh the resources required. This method is widely applied in various fields, including economics, public policy, business, and environmental management.

The process typically involves identifying all relevant costs, both direct and indirect, tangible and intangible, and all anticipated benefits. Costs can include financial expenditures, labor, time, and potential negative externalities. Benefits encompass financial returns, increased efficiency, improved social welfare, and enhanced environmental quality. Once identified, both costs and benefits are quantified, often in monetary terms, though non-monetary factors can also be considered.

A key aspect of cost-benefit analysis is the consideration of the time value of money, where future costs and benefits are discounted to their present value. This ensures that costs and benefits occurring at different points in time are compared on an equal footing. The outcome of the analysis is usually expressed as a net benefit (total benefits minus total costs) or a benefit-cost ratio (total benefits divided by total costs). A project is generally considered worthwhile if the net benefit is positive or the benefit-cost ratio is greater than one. However, cost-benefit analysis is not without its limitations, including difficulties in accurately quantifying all costs and benefits, especially intangible ones, and potential biases in assumptions.
