Kostenpercentage is a financial metric that expresses costs as a share of a base, most commonly revenue. It is used to assess cost efficiency and to monitor how costs scale with business activity. By framing costs as a percentage, organizations can compare performance across time, products, or segments.

Calculation is straightforward: kostenpercentage = (costs / base) × 100. The base can be revenue, gross profit, or another relevant measure. For example, if annual costs amount to €500,000 and revenue is €2,500,000, the kostenpercentage is (500,000 / 2,500,000) × 100 = 20%.

Common variants include the cost of goods sold (COGS) as a percentage of revenue, operating expenses as a percentage of revenue, or specific cost categories such as marketing costs as a percentage of revenue. In budgeting, costs may also be expressed as a percentage of planned activity or output.
