Korrosioonitüüp refers to a classification of corrosion based on its appearance and the mechanism by which it occurs. Understanding the specific type of corrosion is crucial for effective prevention and remediation strategies.

One common type is uniform corrosion, where the surface corrodes evenly across a large area. This is often seen on metals exposed to a general corrosive environment, like atmospheric rusting of iron. Another type is galvanic corrosion, which happens when two dissimilar metals are in electrical contact in an electrolyte. The more active metal (anode) corrodes preferentially while the less active metal (cathode) is protected. Pitting corrosion is characterized by the formation of small, deep holes or pits on the metal surface. This type can be particularly dangerous as it can lead to rapid failure with minimal visible surface damage. Crevice corrosion occurs in narrow gaps or under deposits where stagnant electrolyte can become concentrated with corrosive species, accelerating localized attack. Intergranular corrosion affects the grain boundaries of a metal, weakening it significantly without obvious surface degradation. Stress corrosion cracking combines the effects of tensile stress and a corrosive environment, leading to brittle fracture. Erosion corrosion is a synergistic effect where mechanical wear (erosion) enhances the rate of chemical corrosion. Finally, filiform corrosion appears as worm-like, thread-like corrosion typically under organic coatings. Each of these types requires specific conditions to develop and thus necessitates tailored solutions for their control.
