Korpympäristö
Korpympäristö is a term used in Finnish ecology to describe the ecosystem associated with a korpi, a peat bog or mire. It encompasses the hydrology, soils, vegetation and fauna of bog landscapes and is shaped by long-standing water saturation, acidic and nutrient-poor conditions, and peat accumulation. The term is used in conservation planning, land-use management and environmental research in boreal regions of Finland and other parts of Northern Europe.
Hydrology and soils: The environment is dominated by waterlogged peat soils with a fluctuating water table
Vegetation: Sphagnum mosses form the foundation of korpympäristö, creating the acidic substrate. Common plant groups include
Fauna: Korpympäristö supports specialized fauna adapted to open, wet habitats, including waterfowl and waders seasonally, diverse
Ecology and importance: Bogs store carbon, help regulate hydrology, and support high biodiversity. They are sensitive
Conservation and restoration: Protection of intact bogs, restoration of degraded areas through hydrological reconnection, blocking drainage,
