Korkeushyppääjät

Korkeushyppääjät are athletes who compete in the high jump, a track and field event in which athletes attempt to jump unaided over a horizontal bar placed at measured heights. The goal is to clear the highest possible height. The modern high jump technique most commonly used is the Fosbury Flop, named after Dick Fosbury who popularized it in the 1968 Olympic Games. In this technique, the athlete approaches the bar from an angle, leaps upwards, and arches their back over the bar, landing on their back.

Competitors are allowed three attempts at each height. If they successfully clear the bar, they advance to the next height. If they fail three times at a given height, they are eliminated from the competition. Ties are broken by the fewest misses at the last height cleared. If a tie still exists, the tie is broken by the fewest total misses throughout the competition.

The event requires a combination of speed, power, agility, and technique. Athletes often have a lean and muscular physique. The high jump runway is typically about 20 meters long, and the landing area is a large mat. Elite high jumpers can clear heights well over two meters, with world records standing at 2.45 meters for men and 2.09 meters for women. The sport is governed by World Athletics.
