Koristekromi

Koristekromi is the Finnish term for decorative chromium plating, a finishing process in which a thin layer of chromium is electroplated onto a metal substrate to produce a bright, reflective surface. It is used primarily for aesthetic purposes but can provide modest corrosion resistance and ease of cleaning. The term is common in Finnish manufacturing and design contexts to distinguish decorative chrome from more functional chrome applications.

Decorative chrome coatings are typically applied by electroplating in chromium baths, with thickness on the order of a few micrometres. The substrate is cleaned, degreased, and micro-etched to promote adhesion, then immersed in a chromium bath with controlled current. A passivation layer or clear topcoat may be added to improve durability and tarnish resistance. Compared with hard chromium, decorative chromium is thinner, more reflective, and less resistant to wear and chipping.

Applications include automotive trim, bathroom and kitchen fixtures, furniture fittings, and consumer hardware, where a high-gloss mirror finish is desired. The aesthetic appeal of korunistekromi is a key factor in product styling and market differentiation.

Maintenance and durability considerations: decorative chrome maintains its look with proper care but can be damaged by abrasion or acidic cleaners. Cleaning should use non-abrasive, pH-neutral cleaners and soft cloths; any corrosion or pitting may require refinishing.

Environmental and regulatory considerations: chromium plating raises concerns due to hexavalent chromium in traditional bath chemistries, leading to regulatory controls and shifts toward trivalent chromium plating and alternative finishes. Industry practice emphasizes proper waste treatment, ventilation, and worker safety.
