Koordinátacserével, often translated as "coordinate transformation" or "change of basis," is a fundamental concept in linear algebra and geometry. It refers to the process of expressing vectors or geometric objects in a different coordinate system than the one initially used. This is typically done when a new basis is chosen for a vector space. A basis is a set of linearly independent vectors that span the entire space, meaning any vector in the space can be written as a unique linear combination of these basis vectors.

When a new basis is introduced, the coordinates of a vector with respect to the original basis will change. The relationship between the old and new coordinates is determined by a transformation matrix, often called the change-of-basis matrix. This matrix effectively maps the coordinates of a vector from one basis representation to another.

The purpose of coordinate transformations is varied. In physics and engineering, they are used to simplify problems by aligning the coordinate system with the symmetry of the problem. For instance, rotating a coordinate system can make the equations describing a physical phenomenon simpler. In computer graphics, coordinate transformations are essential for rendering objects, scaling them, translating them, and rotating them in 3D space. Understanding coordinate transformations allows for a more flexible and efficient manipulation of geometric data and abstract mathematical objects within different representational frameworks.
