Koopiamasinat, often translated as "copying machines" or "duplicating machines," refer to a category of devices used for the rapid reproduction of documents. Historically, these machines played a crucial role in facilitating the spread of information before the widespread adoption of digital technologies. Early forms of copying machines relied on various chemical and mechanical processes to transfer ink or toner from an original document to one or more blank sheets.

One common type of early koopiamasinat utilized the spirit duplication process, also known as the Roneo or Gestetner method. This involved creating a master stencil, often made of wax-coated paper or a thin sheet, onto which the original text was imprinted or typed. The stencil was then placed on a drum that rotated and was fed with ink. As the drum turned, ink would pass through the perforations in the stencil, transferring the image to the paper below. This method was particularly popular for creating moderate quantities of copies, such as newsletters, handouts, or short bulletins, and was widely used in schools and small businesses.

Another significant technology was the xerographic copier, which revolutionized document duplication. This process, developed by Chester Carlson, uses electrostatic charges to attract toner particles to a charged drum. The image from the original document is projected onto the drum, creating an electrostatic pattern. Toner then adheres to the charged areas, and this toner is subsequently transferred to paper and fused by heat. Xerographic copiers offered higher quality and greater speed than many earlier methods, eventually becoming the standard for office document reproduction.
