Kontúrvilágítás, also known as rim lighting or edge lighting, is a lighting technique used in photography, filmmaking, and art. It involves placing light sources behind the subject, aimed towards the camera. The primary purpose of kontúrvilágítás is to create a bright outline or halo around the subject, separating it from the background. This effect can enhance the subject's form and add a sense of depth and dimensionality to the image.

The intensity and placement of the light source are crucial for achieving the desired effect. A stronger light source positioned closer to the subject will produce a more pronounced outline. Conversely, a softer or more distant light will result in a subtler rim. Kontúrvilágítás is often used to highlight hair, the edges of a face, or the silhouette of an object. It can be particularly effective when shooting against a dark background, as it helps the subject stand out more prominently. The technique can also be employed to suggest a sense of drama, mystery, or ethereal quality in an image.
