Kontrolliallikaid, often translated as "locus of control," is a psychological concept referring to the degree to which individuals believe they have control over the events that affect their lives. Developed by Julian Rotter in the 1950s, it is a fundamental aspect of personality theory.

Individuals with a strong internal locus of control tend to believe that their own actions and decisions primarily determine outcomes. They see themselves as being in charge of their destiny and are more likely to attribute successes and failures to their own efforts and abilities. Conversely, those with a strong external locus of control believe that outside forces, such as luck, fate, or other people, are more influential in shaping their lives. They may feel that events are largely beyond their personal influence.

This concept is not an all-or-nothing dichotomy but rather a spectrum. Most people fall somewhere between the two extremes. A person's locus of control can influence various aspects of their behavior, including motivation, achievement, stress levels, and overall well-being. For instance, individuals with an internal locus of control are often more proactive in problem-solving and tend to experience less anxiety because they feel capable of influencing their circumstances. Research has shown correlations between locus of control and factors like academic success, job satisfaction, and health behaviors. It is important to note that while having an internal locus of control is often associated with positive outcomes, a rigid external locus of control can sometimes be linked to feelings of helplessness and passivity.
