Kontrastverhältnissen, often translated as contrast ratio, is a fundamental concept in image display technology and visual perception. It quantifies the difference between the brightest white and the darkest black that a display device can produce. A higher contrast ratio indicates a greater range of tonal values, leading to more vibrant and detailed images. Conversely, a low contrast ratio means that the display struggles to differentiate between light and dark areas, resulting in a flatter, less dynamic picture.

The measurement of contrast ratio can vary. Static contrast ratio is measured by comparing the luminance of a full white screen to a full black screen simultaneously. Dynamic contrast ratio, on the other hand, is a marketing term that often measures the contrast ratio by adjusting the backlight intensity based on the image content. This can create a perception of higher contrast but is not a true representation of the display's capabilities under constant conditions.

In practical terms, a good contrast ratio is crucial for viewing content in various lighting conditions. Displays with high contrast ratios excel at reproducing deep blacks and bright whites, which is particularly important for watching movies, playing games, and viewing photographs where subtle shadow detail and bright highlights are essential. The perceived contrast can also be influenced by ambient lighting in the viewing environment, with darker rooms generally allowing for better appreciation of a display's contrast capabilities.
