Kontraststräckning

Kontraststräckning is a technique used primarily in photography and graphic design to enhance visual contrast within an image. The method involves selectively darkening or lightening specific areas to create a stronger distinction between elements, thereby improving the overall composition and impact of the photograph or design. This approach is particularly useful when the original image lacks sufficient contrast, or when certain subjects need to be emphasized.

In photography, kontraststräckning is often applied during post-processing using software such as Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom. The process typically involves adjusting the tonal range of an image by stretching the histogram—extending the shadows to darker values and the highlights to lighter values—while preserving the midtones. This can be done manually by adjusting curves, levels, or using targeted masking to avoid over-processing key areas. The goal is to achieve a balanced contrast that maintains detail in both shadows and highlights without introducing noise or losing tonal gradation.

The technique is also employed in graphic design to improve readability and visual hierarchy. By selectively increasing contrast in text or critical elements, designers can ensure that important information stands out against backgrounds or competing visuals. However, excessive kontraststräckning can lead to unnatural-looking images, particularly if the adjustments disrupt the original mood or subject matter.
