Koneistusmenetelmät refer to the various machining processes used in manufacturing to shape, finish or modify metal and other materials. The term covers both conventional methods operated with machine tools and newer computer‑controlled techniques. Historically, machine methods emerged in the 19th century with the advent of lathes, milling machines and drilling equipment. Over time, developments in power sources, tooling, and control systems have expanded the range and precision of these processes.

The most common categories of machine methods are turning, milling, drilling, grinding, boring, and polishing. Each of these is performed on a specific type of machine. Turning is executed on lathes and is suitable for producing cylindrical parts. Milling machines cut or shape material with rotary cutters and can produce flat surfaces, slots or complex geometries. Drilling uses rotating drill bits to create holes. Grinding provides high‑precision finishing on near‑finished surfaces, while boring extends the size of existing holes with great accuracy. Polishing, either mechanical or abrasive fluid, finishes surfaces to optical quality.

Recent advancements focus on computer numerical control (CNC), which automates toolpath generation and enables complex part geometries, multi‑axis machining, and higher repeatability. CNC has replaced many manual setups, reducing cycle time and human error. Robotic machining and additive manufacturing are emerging as complementary methods, allowing rapid prototyping and customized production.

In industrial practice, a production line often integrates several machine methods. The design of a component, spanning from rough milling to final grinding, is planned using CAD/CAM systems. Material choice, tolerance requirements and production volume influence the selection of the most appropriate machine methods. Quality control uses tools such as coordinate measuring machines (CMM) and optical scanners to verify dimensional accuracy after machining.
