Koneistaja is a Finnish term for a skilled tradesperson in metalworking who operates machine tools to manufacture precision parts. They interpret blueprints and tolerances, set up and adjust machines, select and install cutting tools, and program or parameterize equipment as needed. Typical tasks include turning, milling, drilling, grinding, and performing tool changes; measuring workpieces with calipers, micrometers, and gauges; and carrying out quality checks and documentation. They may also perform basic maintenance on machines and fixtures and troubleshoot production problems to keep processes running smoothly.

Work environments and tools: Work takes place in metal fabrication shops and manufacturing plants. Machinery includes lathes, milling machines, drilling machines, grinders, and computer numerical control (CNC) machines. Increasing automation means many koneistajat have some CNC programming and robotics-related responsibilities. Safety routines, industrial standards, and precise measurement practices are a daily part of the job.

Education and career: In Finland, training typically proceeds through the vocational education and training system, with apprenticeship or on-the-job training leading to a recognized qualification as a koneistaja. Many workers begin with an initial vocational degree in metalworking or manufacturing and then specialize.
