Kompatibilistit

Kompatibilistit is a term used to describe a philosophical theory that attempts to reconcile the concept of free will with the idea that human behavior is determined by causally linked prior events.

This theory posits that human behavior is indeed determined, but this does not necessarily negate the existence of free will. Instead, Kompatibilistit propose that free will is not a binary concept, but rather a matter of degree. According to this view, human behavior may be influenced by factors over which we have no control, but we still possess a degree of autonomy and the ability to make choices that reflect our own desires and values.

Kompatibilistit draw upon various philosophical traditions, including Stoicism, Epicureanism, and the ideas of 17th-century philosopher John Locke. They argue that the concept of free will is compatible with the scientific understanding of the human brain and its alleged causal determinism.

Critics of Kompatibilistit often argue that this theory blurs the lines between determination and free will, essentially undermining the concept of moral responsibility. They claim that if our behavior is determined by prior causes, then we cannot be held accountable for our actions.

However, proponents of Kompatibilistit argue that this theory allows for a nuanced understanding of free will, one that takes into account both the inevitability of determined behavior and the importance of human agency and moral responsibility.
