Kollageenit

Kollageenit, commonly known as collagen in English, is a structural protein that is abundantly found in the connective tissues of animals, including humans. It is one of the most prevalent proteins in the body, making up approximately 30% of total protein content. Kollageenit provides strength, elasticity, and support to skin, bones, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage.

Collagen molecules are composed of amino acids arranged in three polypeptide chains that form a triple helix structure. This configuration grants collagen its tensile strength and durability. There are at least 16 types of collagen identified, with types I, II, and III being the most common in the human body. Type I collagen is predominant in skin, tendons, and bones, while type II is mainly found in cartilage.

The production of kollageenit decreases with age, leading to signs of aging such as wrinkles, reduced skin elasticity, and weaker connective tissues. External factors such as UV exposure, smoking, and nutrition also influence collagen synthesis and degradation.

In recent years, collagen supplements derived from bovine, marine, or porcine sources have gained popularity for their purported benefits in improving skin hydration, elasticity, and joint health. However, scientific evidence regarding the effectiveness of these supplements varies, and further research is ongoing.
