Kognitívviselkedés-terápia, often abbreviated as CBT, is a widely used form of psychotherapy that focuses on helping individuals identify and change distorted or unhelpful thinking patterns and behaviors. The core principle of CBT is that our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are interconnected. By understanding and modifying these connections, individuals can experience improvements in their emotional well-being and functioning.

CBT is typically a structured and goal-oriented therapy, meaning it has specific objectives and a defined course of treatment. Sessions often involve collaborative work between the therapist and the client. The therapist helps the client to recognize negative or irrational thoughts, such as overgeneralization or catastrophizing, and then challenges these thoughts with more realistic and balanced perspectives. Alongside cognitive restructuring, CBT also incorporates behavioral techniques. These might include developing new coping skills, practicing relaxation techniques, or gradually exposing oneself to feared situations.

This therapeutic approach is effective for a broad range of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety disorders, phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and eating disorders. It is also utilized to manage stress and improve self-esteem.
