Koeratõugud

Koeratõugud, or dog breeds, are distinct varieties of the domestic dog species, Canis lupus familiaris, that have been selectively bred for particular physical traits, temperaments, and uses. These breeds have been developed over centuries through a process of artificial selection by humans. The term "tõug" in Estonian translates to "breed" in English. There are hundreds of recognized dog breeds worldwide, each with its unique characteristics and history.

Dog breeds can be categorized into several groups based on their size, purpose, and physical traits. The most common groupings include:

1. Working breeds: These are dogs that were bred for specific tasks such as herding, hunting, or pulling sleds. Examples include the German Shepherd and the Siberian Husky.

2. Sporting breeds: These dogs were bred for activities like hunting and retrieving game. Examples include the Labrador Retriever and the Beagle.

3. Hound breeds: These are dogs that were bred for scenting and trailing game. Examples include the Bloodhound and the Greyhound.

4. Terrier breeds: These are small, sturdy dogs that were bred for hunting and killing small animals. Examples include the Scottish Terrier and the West Highland White Terrier.

5. Toy breeds: These are small dogs that were bred for companionship. Examples include the Chihuahua and the Pomeranian.

6. Non-sporting breeds: These are dogs that were bred for various purposes such as guarding, companionship, or as show dogs. Examples include the Poodle and the Basset Hound.
