Knotless

Knotless is an adjective describing something that lacks knots or is made without knots. The term is used across several fields to indicate a design, technique, or product that avoids tying or tying off with knots. It can refer to materials, manufacturing methods, and procedures in areas such as personal care, medicine, and industrial textiles.

In hair styling, knotless refers to knotless braids and knotless crochet methods. Traditional braided extensions often rely on a knot at the base to secure the extension. Knotless techniques feed the extension into a cornrow braid using a needle or crochet method, producing a smoother, lighter appearance and reducing tension on the scalp. The result can look more natural and last several weeks with maintenance, though installation can be slower and more costly and upkeep is important to prevent shedding.

In medical and surgical contexts, knotless designs include knotless suture anchors and fixation devices. These systems secure tissue without the need for tied knots, using anchors and locking sutures to hold tissue in place. They are used in procedures such as ligament or tendon repairs and aim to reduce bulk at the repair site and simplify the procedure. Benefits can include reduced soft-tissue irritation and potentially faster rehabilitation, but higher material costs and a steeper learning curve are common considerations.

In textiles and industrial applications, knotless describes products joined or manufactured without knots, such as seamless fabrics or braided cords. Knotless designs can reduce snagging and distribute loads more evenly, though they may offer less adjustability or repairability compared with knotted alternatives.
