Knieabstand is a German term that refers to the distance between the knees. In practice it denotes the horizontal gap between the inner sides of the knees when a person stands with the legs in a natural alignment or when seated with the knees in a relaxed position. The measure is a simple anthropometric parameter used to describe lower-limb proportions and overall body configuration.

Measurement and interpretation

Knieabstand can be measured in standing or seated positions. In standing assessment, the smallest horizontal distance between the medial aspects of the knees is recorded with feet together. In seating, measurements are taken between the inner knees or across the thigh region, depending on the protocol. Values are influenced by hip width, leg length, knee and ankle alignment, posture, and muscle tone. Because posture and soft tissue can affect the result, consistent positioning is important for comparison over time or between individuals.

Clinical relevance

In medicine, the knieabstand serves as a rough indicator of lower-limb alignment. Abnormal spacing can be associated with conditions such as genu valgum (knock-knee) or genu varum (bow-leggedness), and may prompt further examination of hip, knee, and ankle joints as well as pelvic and spinal alignment.
