Klórderivátumok, commonly referred to as chlorinated derivatives or organochlorines, are chemical compounds that contain at least one chlorine atom bonded to a carbon atom. This broad category encompasses a vast array of substances with diverse chemical properties and applications. The presence of chlorine can significantly alter the physical and chemical characteristics of the parent molecule, often increasing its stability, lipophilicity, and reactivity in specific ways.

Historically, many klórderivátumok have found widespread use across various industries. They have been employed as solvents, refrigerants, pesticides, herbicides, flame retardants, and intermediates in the synthesis of plastics and pharmaceuticals. Examples include widely recognized compounds like DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane), a former insecticide, and PVC (polyvinyl chloride), a common plastic.

However, the widespread use of certain klórderivátumok has also raised significant environmental and health concerns. Many organochlorines are persistent organic pollutants (POPs), meaning they resist degradation in the environment, bioaccumulate in food chains, and can travel long distances. Some have been linked to endocrine disruption, developmental problems, and carcinogenicity in both wildlife and humans. Consequently, many countries have banned or severely restricted the production and use of certain persistent organochlorine compounds, leading to a shift towards alternative chemistries in many applications. Research continues to explore both the beneficial properties of carefully designed chlorinated compounds and the environmental impact of existing ones.
