In Finnish architectural and construction discourse, it denotes flat pieces of natural stone used for floors, walls and work surfaces. Stone tiles come from quarried materials such as granite, marble, limestone, slate and travertine, and they may also include engineered alternatives that imitate stone. Natural-stone varieties differ in hardness, porosity and appearance, allowing a range of aesthetics from dense, uniform surfaces to pronounced veining and color variation.

They offer durability and a natural aesthetic but can be heavier and more expensive than ceramic or porcelain tiles. Environmental considerations include quarry impact and transport; the long service life can offset higher initial costs.
