Kirjoituslaitteita, commonly known as typewriters, are mechanical or electromechanical machines used to imprint characters on a document. They operate by a user striking keys, which in turn activate levers or hammers that strike an ink-soaked ribbon, transferring ink to the paper. Early forms of writing machines date back to the 18th century, but the first commercially successful typewriter was invented by Christopher Latham Sholes in the 1860s. The QWERTY keyboard layout, still prevalent today, was designed to prevent typebar jams on early machines, placing commonly used letter pairs further apart. Over time, typewriters evolved from purely mechanical devices to include electric models that reduced the physical effort required for typing.

Typewriters were indispensable tools for writers, journalists, secretaries, and businesses for many decades.
