Kiinnittymistyyliä refers to the patterns of relating to others that develop early in life, particularly in interactions with primary caregivers. These styles are believed to shape an individual's expectations and behaviors in future relationships. The concept was first introduced by John Bowlby and further developed by Mary Ainsworth.

There are generally considered to be four main attachment styles: secure, anxious-preoccupied, dismissive-avoidant, and fearful-avoidant. Secure attachment is characterized by trust, comfort with intimacy, and the ability to seek support when needed. Anxious-preoccupied individuals often experience insecurity in relationships, a fear of abandonment, and a desire for excessive closeness. Dismissive-avoidant individuals tend to value independence highly, suppress their emotions, and may withdraw from intimacy. Fearful-avoidant individuals often struggle with both closeness and independence, experiencing a desire for connection coupled with a fear of rejection.

These attachment styles are not fixed and can evolve over time due to new experiences and significant relationships. Understanding one's attachment style can offer insights into relationship dynamics and patterns of behavior, potentially facilitating healthier and more fulfilling connections. While rooted in early childhood experiences, attachment theory also acknowledges the influence of later life events and conscious effort in modifying these patterns.
