Kierretyökaluilla, commonly referred to as threading tools, are essential implements used in metalworking and various assembly processes for creating or modifying screw threads. These tools are designed to cut precise helical grooves onto a cylindrical surface (external threads) or into a pre-drilled hole (internal threads). The most common types include taps and dies.

Taps are used to create internal threads. They typically consist of a hardened steel body with cutting flutes. Taps are rotated into a drilled hole, and the flutes remove material to form the thread. Different types of taps exist, such as hand taps, machine taps, and pipe taps, each suited for specific applications and materials.

Dies, on the other hand, are used to create external threads. They are often circular or have a split design and are used with a die stock or holder. As the die is rotated around a rod or bolt blank, its cutting edges shape the threads onto the exterior surface. Adjustable dies allow for minor variations in thread size.

Beyond taps and dies, other threading tools include thread chasers, which are used to repair or refine existing threads, and thread milling cutters, which create threads using a milling process. The selection of the appropriate threading tool depends on factors such as the material being worked, the desired thread size and pitch, and the required accuracy. Proper lubrication and cutting fluid are often used to ensure smooth operation, extend tool life, and achieve a clean thread finish.
