Khazaria
Khazaria, or the Khazar Khaganate, was a major medieval polity in the Pontic–Caspian steppe, roughly extending from the northern Caucasus to the Volga region and the Caspian Sea. Its heartlands lay along the Volga and at key trade centers such as Itil (near the Caspian shore) and Samandar. The khaganate emerged in the 7th century as a Turkic state that controlled important Silk Road routes and acted as a political and military buffer between the Byzantine Empire to the west and various Islamic caliphates to the south and east. Its power and territory fluctuated over several centuries, making it one of the most influential states in the Eurasian steppe.
