Keukenhygiëne, often translated as kitchen hygiene, refers to the practices and measures taken to ensure cleanliness and prevent the spread of foodborne illnesses in a kitchen environment. It encompasses various aspects of food handling, preparation, and storage.

Fundamental principles of keukenhygiëne include regular handwashing with soap and water, especially after handling raw food, using the restroom, or touching surfaces that may be contaminated. It also involves cleaning and sanitizing all surfaces, utensils, and equipment that come into contact with food. This includes countertops, cutting boards, knives, and dishcloths.

Proper food storage is another crucial element. This involves refrigerating perishable foods promptly at safe temperatures and ensuring that raw and cooked foods are stored separately to prevent cross-contamination. Thawing frozen foods should ideally be done in the refrigerator, under cold running water, or in the microwave, rather than at room temperature.

Cooking food to the correct internal temperature kills harmful bacteria. Using a food thermometer is recommended to ensure that meats, poultry, and fish are cooked sufficiently. Leftovers should be cooled quickly and stored properly to inhibit bacterial growth.

Regular waste disposal and pest control are also important components of keukenhygiëne. Keeping bins clean and covered, and taking out trash regularly, helps prevent attracting pests like rodents and insects that can carry diseases. A clean and organized kitchen environment minimizes the risk of contamination and promotes food safety for everyone.
