Dishcloths are reusable fabrics used for cleaning dishes, cookware, and kitchen surfaces. They come in a range of materials, including cotton, linen, microfiber, and cellulose sponge blends. Cotton dishcloths are highly absorbent and durable; linen dries quickly and tends to shed little lint; microfiber is effective at lifting grease and dries fast but is synthetic; sponge cloths combine softness with excellent absorbency.

These cloths are typically used with dish soap to scrub dishes, wipe countertops, or dry hands. In many kitchens, color coding is used to reduce cross-contamination, with different colors designated for raw meat, dairy, vegetables, and general cleaning.

Care and maintenance vary by material but share key practices. They should be washed regularly, ideally after daily use, in hot water with detergent. Avoid fabric softeners and, for microfiber, avoid high heat that can degrade fibers. Let cloths dry fully between uses to prevent mildew. Replace cloths that become heavily stained, torn, or persistently odorous.

Environmental and practical considerations include the favorable impact of reusables compared with disposable sponges, though some materials (notably microfiber) shed microplastics during washing. Cotton and linen are biodegradable, while synthetic fibers resist decomposition and require energy for laundering.
