Kettenzug

Kettenzug, or chain hoist, is a lifting device that uses a chain drive to raise and lower loads. It consists of a load chain, a gear train inside a housing, a hand chain or electric drive, hooks for the load and the suspension, and a braking system to hold the load in position. Manual versions are operated by pulling the hand chain, while electric versions use a motor and control system to provide lifting power.

In operation, a manual Kettenzug translates the operator’s pull on the hand chain into rotation of the gear train, which winds the load chain around a drum or through sprockets to lift the load. The brake holds the load in place during lifting and can be released for lowering. Electric chain hoists substitute the manual drive with an electric motor and control device, offering higher lifting speeds and capacities. Both types can be used as standalone devices or integrated with trolley systems to move along an overhead beam or gantry.

Selection and safety considerations include lifting capacity (rating), travel height, speed, and duty cycle, as well as the required space and mounting. Regular inspection and maintenance are essential, including checking the load chain for wear, inspecting hooks for deformation, and ensuring the brake and safety latches function properly. Operators must observe rated loads, use proper rigging, avoid side pulling, and ensure secure anchorage.

Applications for Kettenzüge are common in workshops, manufacturing facilities, repair shops, and logistics settings, where they are used to install engines and machinery, move heavy parts, or position loads with precision in confined spaces.
