KettenEnden is a term used in polymer science to denote the functional groups located at the termini of polymer chains. The nature of these chain ends is determined by the polymerization mechanism and by the reagents used to initiate and terminate growth. End groups can be inert, simply marking the end of a chain, or reactive, enabling further chemical modification or linking to other molecules.

In radical chain-growth polymerization, typical end groups reflect fragments from the initiator and terminator. In living or controlled polymerization methods (such as RAFT or ATRP), end groups can be defined with precision, allowing deliberate post-polymerization functionalization or assembly into complex architectures. End groups can be broadly categorized as inert end groups and reactive end groups designed for coupling, crosslinking, or further modification.

End-capping and end-group engineering are common strategies to tailor properties, stability, and functionality. Reactive end groups such as hydroxyl, carboxyl, amine, thiol, vinyl, or epoxy groups enable polymer–polymer coupling, grafting to surfaces, or conjugation to biomolecules. The choice of end groups influences compatibility, processability, and performance in applications ranging from adhesives to bioconjugates.

Characterization of KettenEnden is important for polymer design and quality control. Techniques frequently used include nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry methods such as MALDI-TOF. Size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) with appropriate detectors can provide information on end-group contributions in some systems. Understanding and controlling chain ends enables targeted functionality and the creation of advanced materials.
