Kettaseadme

Kettaseadme is a term used in Estonian to describe a chain-based mechanical device that transmits power or motion between rotating shafts through a chain engaging with toothed sprockets. The concept is rooted in the use of chains to transfer torque over distance, and the term reflects the combination of a chain (kett) and a device or mechanism (seade).

A typical kettaseadme consists of a chain, one or more sprockets, and a tensioning or guiding system. The driving sprocket, connected to a power source, imparts motion to the chain, which in turn rotates the driven sprocket attached to the target shaft. Proper tension, alignment, and lubrication are essential for efficient operation and longevity. Common configurations include roller chains used in power transmission, and timing or conveyor chains used in industrial equipment.

Kettaseadmed are found in a wide range of applications, including bicycles, motorcycles, automotive timing chains, industrial conveyors, and various machines where compact, durable torque transmission is needed. Variants differ in chain type (roller, silent, or high-strength), the number of strands, and the arrangement of sprockets. Maintenance focuses on regular lubrication, tension adjustment, cleaning, and periodic replacement of worn chains and sprockets to prevent elongation and misalignment.
