The term, derived from the Finnish words for “sustainability” and “challenge,” is often used to describe pressing issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, resource depletion, and inequitable growth patterns that threaten future generations.

The concept emerged in the late 20th century alongside global sustainability discourse, particularly after the Brundtlands World Commission on Environment and Development report in 1987, which introduced the idea of sustainable development.
