Kertymävaurioita, known in English as cumulative trauma disorders or repetitive strain injuries, are a group of conditions that affect the body's musculoskeletal system. They are caused by repeated stress or overuse of specific body parts, often over extended periods. These injuries develop gradually and may not be immediately apparent, hence the term "cumulative."

Common causes of kertymävaurioita include performing the same movements repeatedly, maintaining awkward postures for long durations, or using excessive force. Occupational settings are frequently implicated, especially jobs involving repetitive tasks like assembly line work, data entry, or manual labor. Recreational activities that involve repetitive motions can also contribute.

Symptoms can vary depending on the affected area and the specific condition. They often include pain, aching, stiffness, tenderness, throbbing, numbness, or tingling. The affected area may also feel weak or clumsy. While initially the symptoms might only appear during or after the activity, in more advanced stages, they can become persistent and interfere with daily life.

Diagnosis typically involves a medical history, physical examination, and sometimes imaging tests like X-rays or MRI to rule out other conditions. Treatment aims to reduce pain and inflammation, promote healing, and prevent further injury. This can include rest, modified activities, physical therapy, medication, and ergonomic adjustments to the workspace or activity. Prevention is key and involves proper technique, regular breaks, stretching, and maintaining good posture.
