Kergejõustikus

Kergejõustik is the Estonian term for athletics, a sport encompassing a wide range of competitive physical activities based on running, jumping, and throwing. It is one of the oldest and most fundamental forms of sport, with origins tracing back to ancient athletic festivals.

The modern sport of athletics is broadly divided into track and field events, road running, and race walking. Track and field events typically take place on a stadium track and the inner field, and include sprints, middle-distance and long-distance races, hurdles, steeplechase, relays, and a variety of jumping and throwing disciplines. Jumping events include the long jump, triple jump, high jump, and pole vault. Throwing events include the shot put, discus throw, hammer throw, and javelin throw.

Road running events, such as marathons and half marathons, are contested over longer distances on courses that are usually on public roads. Race walking is another distinct discipline that involves a specific walking technique where one foot must always be in contact with the ground.

Kergejõustik is a popular sport globally, featured prominently in the Olympic Games and World Athletics Championships. It requires a combination of speed, strength, endurance, agility, and skill, making it a comprehensive test of athletic ability. Training for kergejõustik often involves specialized routines tailored to the specific demands of each event.
