Kenttätutkimuksia

Kenttätutkimuksia are empirical inquiries conducted outside laboratory or controlled environments, in natural or real-world settings. They are used across disciplines such as sociology, anthropology, ecology, geography, education, and market research to observe phenomena as they occur in context.

Methodologically, kenttätutkimuksia combine planning with flexible data collection. Researchers select samples and gather data through methods like participant observation, unstructured or semi-structured interviews, surveys conducted in the field, focus groups, environmental measurements, and digital traces (GPS, sensors, mobile apps). Fieldwork often involves iterative cycles of data collection and analysis, with reflexive notes on how the researcher influences the setting.

Advantages include high ecological validity, rich contextual detail, and the ability to study processes over time. Challenges include less experimental control, potential biases (observer effects), logistical complexity, safety concerns, and questions about generalizability beyond the studied setting.

Applications span ethnography, case studies, field experiments, ecological surveys, and applied research in urban planning, conservation, public health, education, and consumer research. Variants range from long-term ethnographic fieldwork to targeted field experiments that manipulate variables in real settings while maintaining observational data.

Ethical considerations are central, including informed consent, confidentiality, privacy, risk assessment, and data protection. Researchers must obtain approvals from ethics boards and document transparency and rigor in reporting.
