Keltaruskeita

Keltaruskeita, scientific name Meloe proscarabaeus, are a species of blister beetle belonging to the family Meloidae. These beetles are commonly found across Europe and parts of Asia. Adult keltaruskeita are characterized by their relatively large, soft bodies, typically measuring around 1.5 to 3 centimeters in length. Their coloration can vary, but they are often a dull black or dark brown, sometimes with a slight metallic sheen. They possess long, flexible antennae and their elytra, the hardened forewings, are often soft and do not fully cover the abdomen.

The life cycle of keltaruskeita is quite complex and involves hypermetamorphosis, a type of complete metamorphosis. The larvae are initially mobile and seek out the nests of solitary bees, where they feed on the bee's eggs and stored pollen. After several larval instars, they enter a quiescent stage and then transform into a more grub-like form. The adult beetles emerge in late spring and summer. When threatened, keltaruskeita, like other blister beetles, can secrete a noxious fluid called cantharidin from their leg joints. This chemical is a potent blistering agent and can cause severe skin irritation in humans and other animals. Historically, cantharidin has been used in some traditional medicines, though its use is now largely discouraged due to its toxicity. Keltaruskeita play a role in their ecosystem, primarily as parasites of wild bees.
