Katusetüübid refer to the various structural designs and materials used for the uppermost covering of a building. The primary function of a roof is to protect the interior from the elements, including rain, snow, sun, and wind. Different roof types are chosen based on factors such as climate, building architecture, material availability, and budget.

Common roof types include pitched roofs and flat roofs. Pitched roofs have a slope and are designed to shed water effectively, making them suitable for areas with heavy rainfall or snowfall. Variations of pitched roofs include gable roofs, hip roofs, mansard roofs, and gambrel roofs, each with distinct shapes and angles. Gable roofs, for instance, have two sloping sides meeting at a ridge, while hip roofs slope on all four sides.

Flat roofs, despite their name, typically have a slight slope to allow for drainage. They are often found on commercial buildings and modern residential structures. Materials used for flat roofs commonly include asphalt, rubber membranes, or metal.

Roofing materials themselves also contribute to the classification of roof types. Common materials include asphalt shingles, metal roofing (such as standing seam or corrugated metal), tile (clay or concrete), wood shakes or shingles, and slate. The choice of material impacts durability, cost, appearance, and maintenance requirements. Green roofs, which are covered with vegetation, are another type designed for insulation and stormwater management. The selection of a katusetüüp is a critical decision in building construction, influencing the building's longevity, energy efficiency, and aesthetic appeal.
