Katsomot

Katsomot are the stands or spectator seating areas in venues such as stadiums, arenas, theatres, and cinemas. The term comes from Finnish and refers to places designed for viewing events. In sports and entertainment facilities, katsomot are typically configured as tiered or bowl-shaped seating to provide clear sightlines to the field, stage, or screen. They may be permanent structures made of concrete and metal seating, or smaller, temporary or portable sections. Some venues include standing terraces, referred to in Finnish as seisomakatsomo, in addition to traditional seated areas.

Katsomot are usually divided into sections and levels, with access provided by aisles, stairs, and ramps. Seating arrangements can be assigned, with ticket categories controlling placement, or general admission where spectators choose a spot upon arrival. Accessibility considerations are common, including wheelchair-accessible rows, elevators, and accessible toilets. Design also emphasizes sightlines, acoustics, and comfort, such as shade from sun, shelter from rain, and weather protection where applicable.

Safety and management are central to katsomot, covering crowd flow, evacuation routes, and barrier heights to prevent falls and ensure safe separation between sections. Regular maintenance, fire safety compliance, and clear signage are standard requirements in modern venues. In addition to function, katsomot contribute to the atmosphere and identity of a venue, influencing crowd energy, spectator behavior, and the overall viewing experience for audiences.
