Katmisrakendus, also known as a "catapult" in English, refers to a mechanical device designed to launch projectiles, such as stones, arrows, or other objects, over long distances. Historically, catapults were widely used in warfare, particularly during the medieval period, to breach fortifications, harass enemy troops, or deliver siege weapons. Their design varied across cultures, with notable examples including the Greek *ballista*, the Roman *scorpio*, and the Chinese *kongchong*.

Early catapults operated on simple mechanical principles, utilizing tension or torsion in materials like ropes, wood, or animal sinew to store and release energy. Later versions incorporated counterweights or springs for greater power and accuracy. The most common types included the *torsion catapult*, which used twisted ropes to propel projectiles, and the *counterweight catapult*, which relied on a descending weight to launch stones or other payloads.

Beyond military applications, catapults were also used in ancient engineering projects, such as clearing obstacles or transporting materials.
