Kartiohammaspyörä refers to a type of gear known as a bevel gear in English. Bevel gears are toothed wheels that are used to transmit motion between shafts that are not parallel. Typically, these shafts intersect at a right angle, but bevel gears can be designed for other angles as well.

The teeth of a bevel gear are cut on a conical surface, which allows them to mesh properly with the teeth of another bevel gear on a different shaft. This conical shape is crucial for maintaining smooth and efficient power transfer. The pitch surfaces of two meshing bevel gears form cones that touch along a common line.

There are several types of bevel gears, including straight bevel gears, spiral bevel gears, and hypoid gears. Straight bevel gears have teeth that are straight and parallel to the axis of the cone. Spiral bevel gears have teeth that are curved and oblique, which allows for smoother and quieter operation, especially at higher speeds. Hypoid gears are similar to spiral bevel gears but have axes that do not intersect, allowing for a lower drive shaft position, which is often beneficial in automotive applications.

Bevel gears are commonly found in applications where a change in direction of rotation is required. Examples include automotive differentials, machine tool drives, and various industrial machinery. The precise angle between the shafts and the number of teeth on each gear determine the speed ratio and torque transmission characteristics of the system.
