The term is most commonly associated with the Cartesian coordinate system, also known as the rectangular coordinate system. This system, developed by Descartes, uses two perpendicular number lines, called axes, to define a point in a plane or space. The horizontal axis is typically called the x-axis, and the vertical axis is called the y-axis. The intersection of these axes is the origin, designated as (0,0). Any point in the plane can be uniquely identified by an ordered pair of numbers (x, y), representing its distance along the x-axis and y-axis from the origin, respectively. This innovation revolutionized geometry by allowing algebraic methods to be applied to geometric problems, and vice versa, a concept known as analytic geometry.
