Karbonaattimalmit, often referred to as carbohydrate supplements or carbohydrate loading, are strategies used primarily by endurance athletes to maximize their muscle glycogen stores before prolonged periods of strenuous physical activity. Glycogen is the stored form of glucose in the body, and it serves as a primary fuel source during high-intensity or long-duration exercise. By increasing the amount of glycogen stored in the muscles and liver, athletes aim to delay the onset of fatigue and improve performance.

There are several approaches to carbohydrate loading. The traditional method involves a period of very low carbohydrate intake followed by a period of very high carbohydrate intake in the days leading up to an event. A more modern and often preferred approach involves a gradual increase in carbohydrate consumption over three to four days, while simultaneously reducing training intensity and volume. This "tapering" allows the body to replenish glycogen without the negative side effects that can sometimes accompany extreme dietary shifts.

Consuming carbohydrates increases water retention, as each gram of glycogen stored binds with approximately 3 grams of water. This can lead to a slight increase in body weight, which is a common and expected outcome of carbohydrate loading. The optimal amount of carbohydrate intake for loading typically ranges from 8 to 12 grams per kilogram of body weight per day. It is important for athletes to experiment with different loading strategies during training to determine what works best for their individual needs and to avoid gastrointestinal distress on race day.
